Stupid Speak Outs

"What Elgin needs in the downtown area is not more taverns and restaurants but an assortment of shops and stores to attract residents and tourists. We need stores selling household goods, novelty items, clothing, shoes, jewelry, etc. You can’t build a downtown shopping area with only offices that don’t bring revenue or shoppers. If downtown could be as busy as the Gail Borden Public Library, you’d have a very active city."

This is exactly what drives me nuts about people in this town.  This is from the "Speak  Out" call-in column in the Elgin Courier-News from August 1, 2011.  It was exactly this kind of thinking that helped kill Downtown Elgin in the 1970s and 1980s.  These old backward-thinking old farts and their whole generation nearly destroyed this town because they can't think ahead and adapt to the real modern world.  That is indicative of how they sit on their asses all day and complain by calling into Speak Out from their rotary dial phones instead of getting out and supporting their community.

"If downtown could be as busy as the Gail Borden Public Library, you'd have a very active city."  DUH!

And people call me curmudgeonly!  Quit clogging the revolving door when I'm trying to get into the library!
